In 2022, the most recent year for which data is available, an average of 17.6 U.S. military veterans died by suicide each day

This number comes from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) 2024 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, which found a total of 6,407 veteran suicides that year. The widely cited "22 a day" statistic is from a 2012 report and has since been updated with more comprehensive data.

Key statistics regarding veteran suicide (based on 2022 data):

  • Veterans have a suicide rate (34.7 per 100,000) nearly double that of non-veteran U.S. adults (17.1 per 100,000).

  • Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among veterans under the age of 45.

  • Approximately 10.6 of the daily suicides were among veterans not recently engaged with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care.
